Individual Counseling
Currently accepting individual adult clients for telehealth services.
I follow a humanistic acceptance-based model of therapy. One of the largest premises of ACT is that there are no “good” and “bad” feelings. All feelings are necessary and useful; however, the feelings we label “bad” tend to be overwhelming and scary so we push them away.
Through the process of accepting our emotions and sitting with them, we can begin to learn that they are not as overwhelming as we once thought. When we can sit with these feelings not only are we more kind to ourselves but we can also learn to differentiate them and use them to meet our needs effectively. For example, both anxiety and indigitation can be filed under “bad” or “negative”, however, the ways we would want to address these feelings, comfort them, and the possible pitfalls in addressing them are drastically different. Anxiety could simply mean that we are in an unfamiliar environment and need to engage more, while indignation typically means we have been wronged and something big needs to change.
To help you through this process we will examine patterns of emotions and behaviors throughout your life. If we know why we are acting in a certain way, and where it came from, it can be a lot easier to be kind to those emotions or behaviors. Additionally, I teach DBT and Somatic skills, if we can attend to the signals our body is giving us it is easier to identify and sit with our uncomfortable emotions. Additionally, as a Gottman-trained therapist, I integrate relationship skills to help you effectively communicate your new understanding of your emotions and needs.
